Round peg in a square hole…yes, I know my idiom is reversed

who

who?

hoo!

Have you ever looked at a word and thought “this defies all spelling logic?”

I struggle with LOTS of those words but ‘who‘ takes the WTF spelling honor for me. I often find myself looking at the strange combination of letters and thinking…how? How is that the right letter sequence when clearly boo and zoo make sense?

I am not a good speller.

The family joke is that I missed primary school…all of it.

In college, the year I graduated with an English degree, my creative writing professor, Mr. Cirasa, pulled me aside and said: “Tracy, you are a very creative writer…you are also a very creative speller; let’s hope computers take off.”

They did, in fact, take off – but my creative spelling kept me from doing what I truly wanted to do – write.

I thought there was no way I would be taken seriously as a writer if I lacked a basic foundation…spelling. I secretly wished there was a creative writing job where it didn’t matter if I spelled words correctly (or really, followed all of Strunk and White’s style rules). I felt like a round peg in a square hole.

Eight years after I graduated, I fell into video production (a story for another day). On set I would wordsmith corporate scripts on the fly -the words were being spoken so it didn’t matter if they were spelled properly or had the proper punctuation. My clients were thrilled with how much personality the scripts suddenly had and in no time I was re-working their scripts to sound more conversational (and less like an Instructions For Use insert).

Fast forward 15 years and I’ve narrowed my niche even more. I’m not on set, I’m on the internet helping entrepreneurs engage their online audiences with personality and authenticity.

I get to wear my piggy slippers all day long.

It is a dream come true. And I finally feel like I am doing what I am meant to do.

Am I a better speller these days. That’s a hard no. I still struggle with the “whos” of the English language but it doesn’t matter.

Am I a better writer? That’s a “hell yes!”.

Are you writing a video script that lacks personality?
