I called her a bitch…and she hired me.

About a year ago I held a contest for a free one hour strategy call with me. The winner, winner chicken dinner was Amy Jo.

We arranged a time to have video call and it was the longest hour of my life.

You see, I’m a people person. I like to get to know people and chit chat a bit to break the ice.

Within the first minute of our call, Amy Jo was grilling me on my experience and qualifications and her tone was well…severe. I started to sweat.

I thought to myself…”It’s a FREE call! Why are you grilling me?”

Of course I had done my homework but I still wasn’t quite sure what she did for a living.

Turns out, Amy Jo is an online community specialist.

Turns out, Amy’s client list includes: AOL, Yahoo, Oracle, MTV, eBay, Slack, The New York Times and on and on. She helped design Garage Band for the love of creamed corn!

Turns out, I was officially intimidated.

Amy Jo was interviewing me because she didn’t have time to waste on someone who couldn’t help her. Free hour or not, it was a precious hour out of her day and she wanted to use it wisely.

I relaxed a hair (a really short hair). I explained my framework and what I do and we talked about her launch scripts.

The whole time I thought “Wow! she is really direct. I wonder if this resonates with her avatar?”

I couldn’t get the visual of Nurse Ratched out of my head.

At the end of the hour she said “What can you do for me?”

I hesitated and said “You obviously know your stuff, but you need to agitate a bit more and um, Amy you come off -kind of rigid and that may not resona…”

She cut me off and said “Tracy, say what you mean!”

And because I was still scared of her I blurted out “Well, you come off bitchy.’

GULP -did I just say that out loud?

She didn’t ask me my coaching rates. She didn’t ask me how long it would take. She simply said. “Send me an invoice, you’re hired.”

We worked together on her 4 videos for less than two weeks and Amy Jo had a very successful launch. Not only were her scripts full of trust and value, her delivery was warm and engaging. She smiled and joked and based on her numbers, she clearly connected with her audience.

That free call was an game changer for me. I realized that no matter how successful you are, that success doesn’t translate into confidence in everything.

Amy Jo Kim needed someone to help her include all of the right script elements and to make sure she was connecting to the camera and ultimately to her viewer.

So what about you?

Are you confident your video scripts are hitting the mark?

Are you confident with your on-camera delivery?

Are you harnessing the true power of video for your marketing?
